Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before traveling to Cusco, Machu Picchu, and the Peruvian Andes.
How do I prevent altitude sickness in Cusco?
Arrive in Cusco at least 24–48 hours before high-altitude hikes. Drink plenty of water, sip coca tea, eat light meals, and avoid strenuous exercise on your first day.
When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?
The dry season runs from May to October, offering clear blue skies. Shoulder months (April and November) also offer great weather with greener landscapes and fewer crowds.
How far in advance should I book my tour?
For the Inca Trail or peak-season Machu Picchu tickets, book 3 to 6 months ahead due to government daily permit limits. Day tours can be booked 1 to 2 weeks in advance.
What documents do I need to enter Machu Picchu?
You must present your original physical passport (or national DNI for Andean community citizens). The document number must strictly match your reservation permit.
What payment methods do you accept?
All payments are made through WeTravel, an online payment platform for travel companies: from the booking button on each tour or with the payment link our team sends you. You pay the deposit stated in your quote and the balance on arrival in Cusco or on the agreed date. If a payment method carries a fee, we tell you before you pay.
Where do I store my main luggage during treks?
Most hotels and hostels in Cusco store your main suitcases safely for free. You can also store extra luggage securely in our Machu Picchu Travel Cataleya central office at no extra cost.
What essential gear should I pack for hikes?
Bring comfortable hiking boots, layered clothing (fleece + thermal), a waterproof windbreaker, hat, sunglasses, sunblock, insect repellent, and a refillable water bottle.
Are vegetarian and vegan meals available?
Yes! Our mountain chefs prepare delicious vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-sensitive meals with fresh local ingredients at zero extra surcharge.
What fitness level is needed for treks like Salkantay?
Moderate fitness is ideal. Treks involve 5–7 hours of hiking per day on mountain terrain. Going at your own pace and staying well acclimatized is the real key to success.
Is travel insurance recommended for Peru?
Highly recommended! Comprehensive travel insurance that covers emergency medical assistance, trip interruption, and hiking up to 5,000m provides complete peace of mind.
